Etymology[edit]

From the dialects of the eastern Mediterranean, including Egyptian Arabic بلطجى (bálṭagi, thug), from Ottoman Turkish بالطه‌جی (baltacı, literally axeman). Related to Arabic بَلْطَة (balṭa).
