Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *türt- (to butter), even though the change of meaning from to butter to to prod, goad is unclear. Cognate with Azerbaijani dürtmək, Kyrgyz түртүү (türtüü) and Uzbek turtmoq.
