Old Anatolian Turkish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From an extinct Central Asiatic substrate. Cognate to Karakhanid [script needed] (qulabuz), Chagatai قولاوز (qolavuz, qolauz), Bulgar [script needed] (qolovur), Kipchak قلاغوز (kulağuz), Yakut халабыс (qalabıs), and the Turkic loanwords Byzantine Greek κολόβρος (kolóbros) / χουλοῦβρος (khouloûbros, a Bolghar title), Persian قلاوز (qolâvoz), قلاووز (qolâvuz), Hungarian kalauz.

The similarity to Latin clāvus (nail; (metonymically) helm) and to Classical Syriac ܩܦܠܘܛܐ (qap̄lūṭā, qap̄lōṭā, leek; (figuratively) nail), instead from Ancient Greek πράσον κεφαλωτόν (práson kephalōtón, literally headed leek), is coincidental.
