Arabic[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. The second word may also be سُفْرَة (sufra, leather sheet for transporting food). The word صَفْرَة (ṣafra, yellowness) refers to the bile, bilious taste in the mouth. According to another version (possibly a folk etymology), the word means a mythical snake living in the belly and causing hunger. Lane says it means "hunger", based on the use in this expression.
