Etymology[edit]
From Classical Syriac ܢܝܚܬܐ (nəyāḥtā, “quiet; rest”), where the root ܢ-ܘ-ܚ (n-w-ḥ) relating to “rest”, as Arabic ن و خ (n-w-ḵ), was figuratively extended for becoming quiet and sad minutes of silence.
