From earlier شبان (šobân), from Middle Persian [script needed] (šupān, špān), from Old Persian *fšupāna-, composed of [script needed] (fšu-, sheep) (compare Old Armenian շպետ (špet) and [script needed] (pāna-, protector). Cognate with Pashto [script needed] (špūn), Baluchi [script needed] (šipānk), Northern Kurdish şivan, Zazaki şiwane.
