From Sanskrit चलति (calati) ~ चरति (carati, to go away). Cognate with Bengali চলা (cola), Gujarati ચરવું (carvũ), ચાલવું (cālvũ), Hindi चलना (calnā), Nepali चल्नु (calnu), Punjabi ਚੱਲਣਾ (callaṇā).
