Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian داغ (dāğ, sear, mark left by cauterization), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰégʷʰeti (to burn). Cognate with Sanskrit दाह (dāha). Compare Assamese দাগ (dag), Bengali দাগ (dag), Gujarati ડાઘો (ḍāgho), Maithili दाग (dāg), Marathi डाग (ḍāg), Odia ଦାଗ (dagô), Punjabi ਦਾਗ਼ (dāġ), Sindhi داغُ (dāġu).
