Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀮𑀼𑀡𑀤𑀺 (luṇadi), from Sanskrit लुनाति (lunāti, cuts, reaps), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *lunáHti, from Proto-Indo-European *lunéHti, from *lewH- (to cut off, separate, free). Cognate with Gujarati લણવું (laṇvũ, to harvest), and more distantly to Ancient Greek λύω (lúō), Latin luo, and English loose.
