Hindi[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Punjabi ਵਿਹਲਾ (vihlā) / ویہلا (vehlā), from Sanskrit वेल्य (vēlya, time). The spelling in Hindi reflects phonetic gemination following stressed syllables in Punjabi. Some urban legends suggest a relation to Tamil வேலை (vēlai, job, labour). Doublet of वेला (velā).
