Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Portuguese padre (/⁠padri⁠/, priest, father (term of address for a priest)), from Old Galician-Portuguese padre (father), from Latin pater, patrem (father), from Proto-Italic *patēr, from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (father). Doublet of ફાધર (phādhar), પિતા (pitā), પિતૃ (pitŕ), and પિદર (pidar).

Compare Bengali পাদ্রি (padri), Hindustani پادری / पादरी (pādrī), Marathi पाद्री (pādrī), Konkani पाद्रि (pādri), Malayalam പാതിരി (pātiri) and Sinhalese පාදිලියා (pādiliyā).
