[edit]Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *kaḷ (“toddy”). Cognate with Telugu కల్లు (kallu), Kannada ಕಳ್ಳು (kaḷḷu), Malayalam കള്ള് (kaḷḷŭ) and Tulu ಕಲಿ (kali). Compare Sanskrit कल्या (kalyā), probably a Dravidian borrowing.
