Borrowed from Sanskrit अष्ट (aṣṭa, eight), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Haštā́, from Proto-Indo-European *oḱtṓw. Compare Avestan 𐬀𐬱𐬙𐬀 (ašta), Persian هشت (hašt), also Latvian astoņi, Ancient Greek ὀκτώ (oktṓ), Latin octō, Old English eahta (English eight).
