Etymology[edit]

From ชุม (chum, “to bring together; to call together; to summon; etc”) +‎ พร (pɔɔn, “blessing; benediction”); oldest surviving record of the name dated 1908 BE (1365/66 CE); also believed to be a corruption of ชุม (chum, idem) +‎ พล (pon, “armed force; member thereof”), or a corruption of อุทุมพร (“gular fig”, a plant grown on the right bank of the city).[1]
