Etymology[edit]

Calque of Sanskrit बुद्ध (buddha, Buddha; awakened), from སངས (sangs, purified; cleansed) +‎ རྒྱས (rgyas, extended; fully grown; spread), literally “the awakened-blossomed one”, meaning that the Buddha has awakened from the sleep of ignorance and spread his mind to all objects of knowledge.
