[edit]From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *dan ~ daj (“single, one, whole, only”). Cognate with Lashi da (“one”), as well as Old Chinese 但 (OC *daːn, *daːnʔ, *daːns, “only; but”). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “source? STEDT doesn't list Burmese tâñ "only, no more" as a descendant of *(d/t)a(n/y).”)
