Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *dan ~ daj (single, one, whole, only). Cognate with Lashi da (one), as well as Old Chinese (OC *daːn, *daːnʔ, *daːns, “only; but”). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “source? STEDT doesn't list Burmese tâñ "only, no more" as a descendant of *(d/t)a(n/y).”)

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • Phonetic respellings: ထဲ, ဒဲ
  • IPA(key): /tʰɛ́/, /dɛ́/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: tany: • ALA-LC: taññʻʺ • BGN/PCGN: htè:/dè: • Okell: htè/htè

Usage notes

[edit]

The voiceless variant /tʰɛ́/ occurs after /ʔ/; the voiced variant /dɛ́/ after vowels and /ɴ/.
