From Old Georgian ბურტყლი (burṭq̇li), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *burṭq̇l- (plumage, down). Cognate with Mingrelian ბუტყუ (buṭq̇u), Laz ბუტყუ (buťqu), ბურტყუ (burťqu).
