Old Georgian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

There are two theories of the origin of this word.

The first one suggests that it comes from word შეგუება (shegueba) which means "to adapt"/"to get along with"/"to get used to" ("გუებ" ("gueb") - მე-გუებ-არი (me-gueb-ari) - მეგობარი (megobari).

According to the second theory, it is thought to derive from გობი (gobi, bowl), via the sense of 'one with whom a bowl (of food) is shared'.

Noun[edit]

მეგობარი (megobari)

  1. friend, relative, comrade
    Synonym: მოყუარჱ (moq̇uarē)
