From Old Chinese 左 (OC *ʔsaːlʔ, *ʔsaːls).

Cognate with Thai ซ้าย (sáai), Lao ຊ້າຍ (sāi), Northern Thai ᨪ᩶ᩣ᩠ᨿ, Khün ᨪ᩶ᩣ᩠ᨿ, Shan သၢႆႉ (sâ̰ai), Ahom 𑜏𑜩 (say), Bouyei soix, Zhuang swix.
