Translingual[edit]

Etymology[edit]

A proposed alchemical symbol for platinum, derived from the symbols for the planetary metals gold and iron , as platinum (previously known as 'white gold') was often found mixed with iron. This symbol for the newly discovered metal platinum was created in order to have a symbol to apply to the newly discovered planet Uranus.

Symbol[edit]

  1. (astronomy, astrology) Uranus.
  2. (alchemy, archaic) platinum.

Usage notes[edit]

While neither symbol is exclusive, ⟨⛢⟩ is more common in astronomy and ⟨♅⟩ in astrology. Use of either in astronomy is now uncommon.

Synonyms[edit]

  • (astronomy, astrology):
  • (alchemy): ☽☉
