Etymology[edit]

From (bon, tray; Obon festival, Bon festival), with an epenthetic vowel -i added, in turn from Middle Chinese (MC bwon).[1] This word is also recorded in some western Kansai and eastern Chūgoku dialects up to at least the Shōwa period; some dialects have the forms ぼおに (bōni) and the Yoshino dialect of Nara Prefecture has ぼんに (bonni).[1][2]

First attested in the Kagerō Nikki of 974.[1]
