Glyph origin[edit]

Ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : semantic (walking) + semantic (defend). After the character fell out of regular use, it was reinterpreted as a phono-semantic compound (形聲形声 (xíngshēng)), whence the modern reading.

The original reading is not known.

Pronunciation[edit]
