Etymology[edit]

The kanji spelling is an example of ateji (当て字), in this case used for both the sound values, and for the meanings:

The reading いちじく is thought to be an irregular rendering of the Middle Chinese 映日果 (ʔˠiæŋH ȵiɪt̚ kuɑX, fig), which is from Persian انجیر (anjir, fig) + Middle Chinese (kuɑX, fruit).
