Etymology 3[edit]

Sino-Korean word from 梁山.

Renamed in 1413 from earlier 양주 (梁州, Yangju) in order to restrict the use of the character (, ju, “district”) to large and important towns, replacing it with (, san, “hill, mountain”). 양주 (梁州, Yangju) was itself an orthographic renaming in 940 of former 양주 (良州, Yangju), short for the Silla placename 삽량주 (揷良州, Samnyangju) which was adopted in 665 CE.
