Etymology[edit]

Sino-Korean word from 春川, from (springtime) + (stream). Renamed in 1413 from earlier 춘주 (春州, Chunju), as part of an administrative policy to reserve the character (ju, province) for the largest towns only. The name 춘주 (春州, Chunju) was itself coined in an administrative rearrangement in 940, and appears to be of unclear provenance.
