Etymology[edit]
Per Kloekhorst, from Proto-Anatolian *món or similar; cognate with Lycian 𐊎𐊚 (mẽ, “as; so, likewise”), Hittite 𒈠𒀀𒀭 (ma-a-an /mān/, “like, as, how; if, whenever”) and Palaic 𒈠𒀀𒀭 (ma-a-an /mān/, “when”). The Proto-Anatolian word is of uncertain but probably Proto-Indo-European origin: further compare Old Irish má (“when”), Tocharian A mänt (“how?”), Tocharian B mant (“so”, conj.) and perhaps Ancient Greek μέν (mén, “while, so”).
