Etymology[edit]
From Ancient Greek ἆθλον (âthlon), largely via English.
Pronunciation[edit]
Suffix[edit]
-athlon c
Usage notes[edit]
- Only used in reference to biathlons and triathlons. For competitions with more than three events, compounds of a numeral and kamp are used instead. For example, a quadrathlon is not known as a *kvadrathlon, but as a fyrkamp.
- SAOL, published in 2015, recommends the spelling -atlon,[1][2] but -athlon remains the dominant form. Both are pronounced the same.
