Etymology

Possibly coined in Japan as a compound of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Chinese-derived elements Lua error in Module:affix/templates at line 130: The |lang= parameter is not used by this template. Place the language code in parameter 1 instead., from the way that a fleet commander's signal flags would be flown from the mast of the flagship.[1]

Alternately, possibly from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Chinese compound (deprecated template usage) 旗艦 (*ghiə *ɣam). Compare modern (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Mandarin traditional (deprecated template usage) 旗艦旗舰 and simplified (deprecated template usage) 旗舰 (qíjiàn).
