Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as bemele in 1096. Etymology unknown. Potentially a compound of an uncertain first element and lo (light forest). A derivation from Old Dutch male (place where courts are held) is unlikely.

See also Limburgish Bieëmele.
