This grouping became popular in German online culture during the 2000s. Excluding compounds, there are only three words in the German language ending in -nf, plus two proper names. However, there is constant dispute about the actual number of these words.[1]

There is another relatively small group of words ending in -nft, for example Zukunft, Vernunft, etc.

In some regions of Germany, the sequence -nf- is commonly pronounced /mf/, for example, fünf becomes IPA(key): /fʏmf/.
