Etymology[edit]

From κῆτος (kêtos, whale, great see creature) +‎ ῥίνη (rhínē, rasp, file) or + ῥινός (rhinós, hide, skin), the first element due to the shark's scale and the second refering to the jagged and raspy skin of a shark.
