Idiom[edit]

Fransız kalmak

  1. Not to understand. Literally, "to stay like a French", an idiom that means not to understand something. For example, as two people are talking, a third one joins them belatedly and they keep talking. The third one does not understand anything and says "Ben Fransız kaldım" (I stayed like a French).
  2. To stay impartial because a person doesn't have the required knowledge to interfere in a matter. They cannot grasp the topic as they should. Also lacking consideration for other people.

Usage notes[edit]

This idiom is a bit derogatory and makes fun of French people.
