Borrowed from Bengali গাঙ্গুলি (gaṅguli), from Sanskrit गङ्गा (gaṅgā) +‎ उपाध्याय (upādhyāya), literally teacher from the banks of the Ganges. This surname is mostly found in West Bengal.
