Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as ghesele in 1285. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from Old Dutch sele (“hall home”) prefixed with the collectivising prefix ge-. An alternative hypothesis posits a derivation from a compound of either Old Dutch Giso (“a personal name”) or Middle Dutch gees (“infertile”) and lo (“light forest”).
