Etymology[edit]

Calque of Low German Grote Manndränke, itself a calque of North Frisian Grat Maandreenk (literally “great man-drowning”). The Frisian verb dränk or dreenk (cognate of German tränken, English drench) means “to drown”. Formally, groß + Mann + Tränke.
