Literal meaning being between rivers, referring to the Nera (in Latin, Nār or Nahar, from which the archaic genitive Nahars is added for disambiguation with Interamna Praetūtia, now called Teramo) and Tiber. See also Ancient Greek Ἰντέραμνα (Intéramna).
