Luxembourgish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old High German lefs, from Proto-West Germanic *lepuʀ. The consonantism -ps may be a simple phonetic simplification, or a blend with the northern form of the same root that led to German Lippe. The dialectal border between both forms runs close to Luxembourg. Cognate with German Lefze (and Lippe).
