Etymology[edit]

First attested as oldeholtwolt in 1320. Compound of oud (old), either holt (rising deciduous forest) or dialectal hol (low-lying) and wold (marsh forest, swamp forest). The element oud was added to distinguish the settlement from Nijeholtwolde.
