Proto-Balto-Slavic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Formally reflects Proto-Indo-European *werH-, possibly back-formed or reanalyzed from *h₂wer-. From the later descend Sanskrit अपिवृणोति (apivṛṇoti, to close, cover), Latin aperiō (to open, to uncover) < *ap-wer-, operiō (to close) < *op-wer-, Oscan veru (door, pl.), Ancient Greek ἀείρω (aeírō, to lift, raise).

Conjugation[edit]

  • Baltic: Fixed accent, je-present in Baltic.
  • Slavic: Root-aorist with fixed accent in the preterite + simple thematic present with mobile accent.

Descendants[edit]

    • Lithuanian: vérti
