Etymology[edit]

According to Schrijver, this noun comes from *pelh₂- (to drive), which would give Proto-Celtic *ɸalamom.[1] Matasović agrees that it is possible to derive this substantive from that root; yet, he preffers to derive this noun from Proto-Indo-European *h₂el- (to surround), upon which he connects it to Hittite 𒄩𒀀𒇷 (ḫāli, pen, corral (for cows and horses)).[1] However, Kloekhorst dismisses the derivation of Hittite 𒄩𒀀𒇷 (ḫāli) from Proto-Indo-European *h₂el- (to surround).[2]
