Etymology[edit]
Stüber relates this to Proto-Indo-European *slewk-, *slewg- (“to swallow”), whence also Middle High German slucken (“to gobble, swallow”) and Ancient Greek λυγκαίνω (lunkaínō, “to swallow”).[1]
Contains the suffix *-sman.
