Etymology[edit]

Uncertain, but a speculative relationship to Sanskrit रत्न (rátna-, possession; precious object, treasure, riches, goods), itself of uncertain origin, has been proposed, assuming common derivation from Proto-Indo-European *(H)ren-t- with metathesis of *nt into Sanskrit /tn/.
