Proto-Finnic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Proto-Germanic *armaz (pitiful, poor), with later ameliorative semantic development. In the modern Finnic languages, the meaning "pitiful" survives only dialectally in Estonian, and in the derivatives *armahtadak, *armastadak.
