Etymology[edit]

From earlier *arbaiþiz. Apparently linked to a verb *arbijaną, *arbāną (be orphaned), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃órbʰos (orphan). Compare, with a different suffix, Proto-Slavic *orbota (work).
