From Proto-Indo-European *lāp-, *lēp-, *lep- (to be flat). Cognate with Lithuanian lopa (paw, claw), Proto-Slavic *lapa, dialectal Armenian լափ (lapʻ), լուփ (lupʻ, palm, flat of the hand).
