From Proto-Indo-European *h₂(w)lop- ~ *h₂ulp- ((red) fox). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēx), Old Armenian աղուէս (ałuēs), Proto-Indo-Iranian *HlawpaHćás, Proto-Celtic *loɸernos.
