Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *arź-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁órǵʰis (testicle).

Cognate with Ancient Greek ὄρχις (órkhis, testicle), Avestan 𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬍 (ərə), Old Armenian որձիք pl (orjikʻ, testicles). Baltic cognates include derivatives Lithuanian er̃žilas, ar̃žilas (stallion), aržùs (hot-tempered, lustful), Latvian ērzelis (stallion).
