[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *źéidis,*źéidas, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeyǵʰ- (“knead clay, coat with loam”) via metathesis. Cognate with Old Prussian seydis. (i.e zeydis, with s due to German orthography).
