Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *hūzijaną, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *kuHs-yé-ti,[1] from *kewHs- (to pay; to hire) +‎ *-yéti. Cognate with Hittite 𒆪𒊭𒀭 (ku-uš-ša-an /⁠kuššan-⁠/, pay, salary, fee, hire).[2]
