Gothic dis-[edit]

Gothic 𐌳𐌹𐍃- (dis-) seems to have almost completely supplanted native 𐍄𐍅𐌹𐍃- (twis-); aside from that, some of the forms in 𐌳𐌹𐍃- (dis-) match up with the West Germanic forms in *twiz-. Is it acceptable to use the Gothic forms in reconstructions prefixed with *twiz-, so long as we note the replacement? Or would it be better to leave the Gothic forms out of it altogether? Two prefixes[edit]

The meaning of "two, in two" is correct for this prefix, but the meaning "apart, separate" is probably better rendered as *tiz-, cf. Latin dis-, Ancient Greek dia- (< diha- < dis-a-). This allowed an easy re-rendering of Germanic *tiz- to dis- in Gothic, whether through contact with Latin or Celtic. Compare the influence on du-, which represents a re-rendered Germanic *tō-, as if from Celtic *dū-, earlier *dō-. Anglom (talk) 07:23, 7 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
